DIY Hemp or CBD Oil Recipe: CBD-Infused Butter

DIY CBD recipes can be as easy as A, B, C! This DIY CBD recipe is ideal for the home cook looking to infuse their favorite meals with the wellness benefits of CBD.

Although this CBD recipe is easy, it is time-consuming. Best to do this on a down day or a work-from-home day when you have the ability to remain near the kitchen.

DIY CBD Recipes: Things to Remember

This CBD recipe is pretty versatile! To start, you'll need either a CBD oil or 3.5 grams of raw hemp flower.

PLEASE NOTE! As with all things CBD, there is no real set-in-stone guidelines to dosing, how much raw hemp flower to use, or how much CBD oil to use.

  • Use this recipe as a guideline and take the opportunity to experiment to find the right amount of hemp flower or CBD oil for your cannabutter!
  • Your CBD oil may have a different concentration of CBD. Same with your raw hemp flower! This may make your cannabutter more or less potent.
  • Remember that it takes time for you to feel the effects of CBD when you're consuming CBD-infused edibles. It can take up to 2 hours for you to feel the benefits of CBD!
  • If this is your first time making CBD-infused edibles, we recommend infusing a daytime snack or dessert that you can nibble on to determine your dose and tolerance. If you eat too much, you may end up falling asleep!

Raw Hemp Flower

1. Decarb your hemp! Raw hemp flower is mostly rich with CBDA, the chemical precursor to CBD. To transform all that juicy CBDA into CBD, you'll need your hemp flower to go through the decarboxylation process.

    • Preheat your oven to 245ºF.
    • Grind your hemp flower with a fork, grinder, or in a blender
    • Place parchment paper on an oven-safe tray
    • Spread hemp flower buds on top of parchment paper
    • "Cook" hemp flower in oven for 30 - 40 minutes (older, drier hemp may require less time)
    • Check on hemp flower every 10 or so minutes, moving it around with spatula so that it the oven's heat penetrates evenly

2. Melt your butter! Melt your butter in a saucepan or stockpot. Add 1 cup of water. Feel free to add salt or sugar if you are using your cannabutter for brownies, etc!

    • Melt your butter on low heat. The water is technically optional but super helpful when it comes to not scorching your hemp flower and butter!

3. Add in the hemp flower! As the butter begins to melt, add in your hemp flower gradually. Stir with love!

4. Simmer your cannabutter to perfection! Simmer your mixture of water, butter, and raw hemp flower for 3 - 4 hours on low heat. Stir occasionally, every 30 or so minutes. The mixture should never come to a full boil!

5. Strain your delicious cannabutter! Use a strainer or fix a cheese cloth over a jar and pour that juicy cannabutter over it! Allow it strain freely, without forcing it.

    • Don't squeeze- this may force not-so-tasty hemp flower particles into your cannabutter.

6. Refrigerate! Refrigerate for at least an hour to let the butter cool and form. If there's any excess water once your cannabutter has formed, you can easily take the cannabutter out with a knife and drain the water!

7. Test-dose before enjoying! Test the potency of your cannabutter before infusing any recipes or adding it to your food. Spread a little bit of your cannabutter on a piece of bread or cracker, enjoy, and wait 1.5 - 2 hours. Note how you feel and go from there!

CBD Oil

1. Melt your butter! Melt your butter in a saucepan or stockpot. Add 1 cup of water. Feel free to add salt or sugar if you are using your cannabutter for brownies, etc!

    • Melt your butter on low heat. The water is technically optional but super helpful when it comes to not scorching your CBD oil and butter!

2. Add in CBD oil! Add in your preferred amount of CBD oil. We used half of our 30 mL 1000 mg CBD Oil Tincture, for a total of about 500 mg of CBD!

3. Simmer your cannabutter to perfection! Simmer your mixture of water, butter, and CBD oil for 3 - 4 hours on low heat. Stir occasionally, every 30 or so minutes. The mixture should never come to a full boil!

4. No need to strain! Just refrigerate! Refrigerate for at least an hour or until your cannabutter has cooled and hardened.

5. Test-dose before enjoying! Test the potency of your cannabutter before infusing any recipes or adding it to your food. Spread a little bit of your cannabutter on a piece of bread or cracker, enjoy, and wait 1.5 - 2 hours. Note how you feel and go from there!

Enjoy your delicious cannabutter solo on toast or sub for butter in all your favorite recipes!

PS. You can also follow the same recipe above to make CBD cooking oil; just sub the butter for your choice of oil (we prefer olive or coconut)!
